New Twist in Brittany Murphy Death
Posted Jan 30th 2010 9:48AM by TMZ Staff
Brittany Murphy‘s death investigation has taken a mysterious turn — the L.A. County Coroner’s Office is now trying to fill in some critical gaps in her medical history … sources tell TMZ.
We’ve learned Brittany was suffering from severe anemia and other conditions and was under a doctor’s care. The Coroner’s Office received medical files from her doctor … but they show her last visit was months before her death.
We’re told the pathologist assigned to the case has been told by Murphy’s friends and family that other doctors treated Murphy during her final months. The Coroner’s Office is looking for the other doctors to determine her medical condition leading up to her death.
The pathologist also wants to know what medications may have been prescribed by the other doctors.
The toxicology report is not completed. Once the report reveals the drugs in Brittany Murphy’s system at the time of her death, the Coroner’s staff will then determine if the medications were prescribed to Brittany or, possibly, someone else.
As we first reported, investigators found numerous medications in Murphy’s home after her death — medications prescribed to Murphy, Simon Monjack, Brittany’s mother Sharon Murphy and “unidentified third party names.”
We’re told the Coroner will not release the cause of death for weeks.

Story developing …
TMZ was also credited as the first source to break the news of Michael Jackson’s death earlier this year, earning the site mainstream credibility it previously lacked.
Below is a screenshot of their report:
As of now, the report has not been confirmed by any other sources, but the way the news is spreading, especially online, speaks to the trustworthiness the website has earned on the celebrity death beat.
UPDATE: Wikipedia, however, does not seem to agree that TMZ is a “reliable source,” according to the revision history of the article for Brittany Murphy:
“(Changed protection level of Brittany Murphy: repeatedly being declared dead; BLP is applicable until a reliable source cites her death…)”

UPDATE (4:34 pmET): Gossip Cop has confirmed Murphy’s death with Los Angeles Coroner’s office:
Early this morning, Murphy went into full cardiac arrest and could not be revived. The Los Angeles Fire Department reports they received a call from a home belonging to Murphy’s husband, Simon Monjack. Now an official in Los Angeles Coroner’s office confirms to Gossip Cop that they are in receipt of a preliminary death notice for Brittany Murphy, and that her body will be transported to their office later today.
A rep for Murphy e-mailed Gossip Cop to say the family thanks everyone for their “love and support,” and that “in this time of sadness,” the family asks the public to “respect their privacy.”

Ed Winter, spokesman for the L.A. County Coroner’s Office, says an autopsy on Brittany Murphy will be conducted in the next day or so — but as of now no foul play is expected.
Hhhhmmm, pneumonia for Britney…. didn’t the so-called “autopsy” say MJ’s lungs were inflamed?
Murphy Sick and Vomiting Just Before She Died
Posted Dec 21st 2009 12:30AM by TMZ Staff
Brittany Murphy was very ill in the hours before she went into cardiac arrest and died, sources tell TMZ.
We’re told Murphy was taking prescription meds for flu-like symptoms she had been experiencing for several days. We’re told Murphy began vomiting early Sunday morning and told family members she was feeling very ill.
Sources say various prescriptions were found in the home — written for Brittany Murphy, husband Simon Monjack, and Brittany’s mom. One source says, “There were a lot … a lot of prescriptions in the house.”
Law enforcement sources tell us Murphy collapsed in the bathroom and somehow ended up in the shower … there was, we’re told, a significant amount of vomit in the immediate area.
We’re also told authorities did not find illegal drugs in the house, but Murphy was definitely taking various prescription meds.
Sources say her condition and the meds could have triggered a heart attack, but it’s too early to know. An autopsy will be performed Monday or Tuesday. We reported earlier Monjack did not want an autopsy but ultimately it’s the Coroner’s call.
As we first reported, Brittany Murphy’s mother told paramedics her daughter suffered from diabetes. We’re told it was type 2 diabetes and people involved in the case doubt her condition caused her

Brittany Murphy cause of death confirmed by California Coroner
Actress Brittany Murphy died from pneumonia — something her family thought was a simple flu or related to the common cold. However, that was not the only thing that killed her. The ultra-thin celebrity many suspect had an eating disorder was also anemic and a variety of prescription drugs also played a role, coroner’s officials in California confirmed Feb. 4.
BRITTANY MURPHY CAUSE OF DEATH CONFIRMED
According to the Huffington Post,
The primary cause of the death was community acquired pneumonia, with contributing factors of iron deficiency anemia and “multiple drug intoxication,” according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
The death was ruled accidental.
Coroner’s spokesman Craig Harvey declined to specify what types of drugs were involved in Murphy’s death but said they were all prescription medications. Details about the drugs the “Clueless” and “8 Mile” star had in her system will be released in several weeks when a complete report is done.
Murphy died Dec. 20 at age 32 after collapsing at her Hollywood Hills home. Her mother and husband have said the actress didn’t abuse prescription medications or have an eating disorder.
