Joe Jackson, the father of the late Michael Jackson, has urged fans of the King of Pop to show restraint in as the trial of his son’s doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray, begins.

Michael Jackson, even in death, has an extremely large and dedicated fan base. It is a fan base that is very vocal and demonstrative in its support for Michael Jackson. In many ways, the sheer numbers and commitment of

Jackson’s fans have led to the many high profile posthumous awards and gestures of recognition that has come his way in recent months.

Since his passing, Michael Jackson has been honored by the Grammy Awards, had his Captain EO ride re-opened at Disneyland, and had growing numbers of tributes on social networking sites such as Facebook; all just to name a few.

While surely appreciative of the efforts of his fans, Joe Jackson, however, is urging them to focus their efforts and energies on peaceful demonstrations and tributes dedicated to Michael Jackson.

In a letter addressed to Michael Jackson’s fans, Joe Jackson wrote about the upcoming trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, “”We would like to urge fans that are planning to attend to please do so in peace, unity and love for Michael. There should be NO violence, NO slander, NO yelling, and NO bad-mouthing or name-calling of Murray or his supporters…By calling names, we are lowering ourselves to their level.”

Joe Jackson himself is no fan of Dr. Conrad Murray; he has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the doctor himself.

But it could very well be that Joe Jackson is accomplishing two objectives with this letter to his son’s fans. One, he could feel that he is honoring Michael Jackson’s legacy by focusing on love and peace rather than hate and rancor. He also could have another motive as well. He might believe that if he takes the high road and urges millions of Michael Jackson fans to do the same, he stands a better chance of winning his court case, as public and court sentiment may strengthen if he is perceived as handling everything the ‘right’ way.

Reaction in the Michael Jackson fan community tonight to Joe Jackson’s comments is mixed. There is still a great deal of anger and sense of loss when Michael Jackson’s fans think about the late

King of Pop. To hear from anybody that they should contain their feelings is difficult for many to accept. That said, there is also a recognition that no matter how unfair Michael Jackson’s death may have been, the ultimate tribute to him is to stay above the fray and maintain a focus on peace and justice.

As Dr. Conrad Murray’s trial begins in the upcoming weeks, it will be interesting to see if Michael Jackson’s fan base heeds the advice of his father, Joe Jackson.
